A Single Mom’s Satisfaction
CBN.com “I learned so much just to get out of debt that now I'm not in debt, and I won’t get in debt again.”
For Maria Diaz, life is better than she ever dreamed it could be. She loves her job, has a comfortable home and plenty of money in the bank. But things weren’t always so perfect.
“You’d open up my wallet, and you would see a Sears credit card and a Montgomery and JC Penney’s card. Back then I thought that they were giving me the opportunity to have things that I couldn’t afford. I shouldn’t have been buying at that time.”
In fact, financial problems contributed to the end of two marriages.
“I never really had a notion that I was in debt. I always wanted something so I would go buy it. I had a credit card. I would charge it. Then I got to the point where I couldn’t even pay my credit cards.”
Maria was bitter over her failed marriages, and she was nearly $70,000 in debt! Everything seemed to be going wrong for her. Until…
“I turned on the TV, and Pat was on. I remember going to the remote, trying to change the channel, and that’s when he said, ‘Don’t change the channel!’
“I don’t even know exactly what he said. I just remember it touched my heart. The next thing, I walked towards the TV, and I got on my knees. I prayed the sinner’s prayer.”
From that moment on everything changed for Maria.
“I started going to church because that was one of the things Pat said. Find a church.”
And she learned about tithing and giving.
“I started very minimal with $20, maybe $10. I knew it wasn’t my tithe but I started at a point to where I could afford it. Then it got to like maybe two percent, and it grew like to five percent.”
Maria found that as she gave more, God provided. She was even able to send her son to a private school on her limited salary! In addition, Maria started slowly paying off her $70,000 credit card debt! All as a single mom.
“Sometimes I had to have two jobs and long hours. I’d do work on the weekends. But I stopped spending money, and I remember cutting up all my credit cards.”
Eventually Maria took another big step in her giving and became a CBN founder. As for the debt that overwhelmed her? Today – except for the house payment – she is debt free.
Maria is grateful to CBN because it was The 700 Club that helped her find a personal faith in Jesus. She’s thankful that God has used the ministry to draw her closer to Him.
“CBN is my home. That’s where I grew up. And that’s where I learned what I know now,” Maria says. “Always tithe. Put God first. Seek His kingdom first and then everything else will be added.”
