The Bible verses centered and calmed me, which made me a better helpmate to my husband.
His test did come back positive. By the time we received the result, several days later, I was leaning on the Lord for literally every move and almost every thought. This enabled me to be the wife and person that alone, without God, I just cannot be — patient, centered, and reassuring.
I re-read a few of my favorite verses in the Bible, including
Exodus 23:25
"You must serve only the LORD your God. If you do, I* will bless you with food and water, and I will protect you from illness.

:
“So you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you” (NKJV).
From the New Testament, I tried to picture this scene:
“And the whole multitude sought to touch him, for power went out from Him and healed them all” (
Luke 6:19
Everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone.

As my husband’s appetite decreased (he lost nine pounds during his illness!), I made tempting meals and prayed over them, hoping they would bring him strength and healing.
It was hard staying at least 10 feet away from him at all times, and I moved into the guest room to keep myself safe. Interestingly, God blessed me with absolutely no worries about my own health, as well as the powerful sense of being totally encircled with His love and grace. It was, incredibly, easy to pray, “Thy will be done,” and mean it with all my heart. The Holy Spirit clarified my reading and bolstered my soul during this trying time.
Was it possible that there was a gift in this illness? Jesus himself taught us about the redemption in suffering—his suffering. And while I was not the one who was ill, I seemed to be growing closer to our Lord in leaps and bounds, my dependence on him was so complete.
Will I get Coronavirus? I don’t know; the truth is, none of us does. What I do know is that I will continue to lean on God, and continue to thank and praise him for my dear husband’s return to complete health. As the Bible says,
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (
Isaiah 41:10
Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God.I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

We are so lucky to serve such an awesome and loving God!
I was definitely copying the behaviors of this world, so I decided to change my perspective. Imagine if you suddenly found yourself deserted on an island with a beloved friend whom you longed to get to know better. Would you immediately busy yourself locating a power source and hooking up a television to watch news or mysteries? No! You would revel in the time spent with this treasured friend, seeking to strengthen your bond.
That’s our chance today, with God! If we change our perspective, we can reach deeper levels to our faith during quarantine. We can pray more deeply and honestly, listening intently, heart and mind open, for God’s replies. We can read our Bibles thoughtfully, and pray to the Holy Spirit for illumination of those precious Words. Holy scripture infallibly points the way:
“We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” (
2 Corinthians 10:5
We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

I’m not suggesting canceling television viewing in our homes, but I am suggesting being discriminating in our choices. My husband and I, along with our 21-year-old son quarantining with us, decided to watch The Chosen, a wonderful Christian production by VidAngel. This free series presents viewers with a supremely compelling Jesus—one who laughed and loved, felt sorrow, appreciated friendships, and brought God’s kingdom to earth in the way only he could. The disciples in The Chosen are mere men, full of faults and questions, chosen by Christ for the most important work imaginable. This series sparked conversations between the three of us and left us feeling safe and protected, no matter what the future brings. Our Lord is truly in control.
Now, I actively choose wholesome movies and shows to watch and strictly limit my news intake. And no murder mysteries for me. And let me tell you, my mood has significantly improved! I am going to activate my will to use this precious time to become closer to our Lord. He loves us so much; let’s return that greatest of loves.
I sip my coffee almost every morning from this mug, ponder that phrase and feel it resonate deep within my heart. When another close friend told me that her whole family was coming down with the coronavirus, I went to my cabinet and pulled out my mug, staring at it. It quieted my concerns and opened the pathway to prayer.
Yesterday, another friend reached out; this time, a college friend. She sent me a YouTube link to a short sermon given by a blind woman who explained that she was reading her notes in Braille. What was her message? It was taken from
The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still. (NIV)
Again, the clear message to be still! Considering our longing to be of service during the chaos around us, why would God beckon us to first be still?
Because He’s got this. And He will direct our actions, thoughts, and prayers — if we let Him.
Our God is mighty, loving and infallible. He is allowing this virus, so He has a plan. On Easter Sunday we celebrate His son Jesus Christ rising in glory from the dead, fulfilling Scripture. What is the message in the resurrection? God is in control, powerfully and with finality. And the righteous have the promise of eternal life, which no earthly force can put asunder.
Remember who is in control during these troubled times. Not the virus, but our Lord. Whether in our bedrooms or backyards, watching online services or praying quietly in a favorite chair, this Easter we will celebrate the resurrection of Christ our Savior, freeing our hearts to be still and know where all true hope lies.
Lord, gather us to You in our time of trouble. Help us to be still and look to you for all assurance and hope. Be with the sick in a powerful way, and guide and comfort our leaders, doctors, nurses and first responders during this pandemic.
