How One Couple's Obedience Led them to a Sevenfold Blessing

A couple in Florida is keeping seven brothers and sisters together who were once wards of the state and put in four different foster homes.

DaShoan and Sofia Olds will officially adopt Necia, 12, Eric, 10, Erica, 10, Zavian, 9, Dava, 8, Keyon, 5, and Reggie, 4, in September.

The Olds have been married for 13 years but never had children of their own.

"It just wasn't in the plans for it to happen for us yet, and maybe this was the reason," Sofia said. "We always wanted to do adopt children. We just didn't know it'd be seven."

That all changed when a story about the children aired on a local news station.

"It was a done deal from the day we saw the story," Sofia said. "Before we even met them, it was a done deal...We looked at each other and said, we've got to do this. It's time. There's no maybe, we have to do this."

DaShoan told ABC News they felt compelled to help the children.

"My wife and I were blessed with a house that was too big for us," he said. "That would be so selfish of us to have the space [and] for us not to offer our home to them. I always felt that when you are blessed, you'll be a blessing."

Blair Bell, the children's representative and adoption specialist, said the children faced a number of personal challenges in their first home and spent two years in foster care.

There are more than 18,000 children in foster care in the state of Florida alone, according to the Christian Alliance for Orphans

Many people told Blair getting all seven children out of the system would be an improbable feat.

"I heard from so many people that finding a home for seven children would be impossible," Bell told WJHG-TV. "Siblings is...that's the longest bond that you'll have; it was very important to find a home that would be able to take all seven and make a real forever family."

"We thought we would never get adopted, but I thought this was a really good blessing for us," Necia said.

The Olds said it was love at first sight.

"Looking at those faces, I could see the sweetness and the kindness knowing anything that happened in their lives wasn't their fault and if I can do anything to keep them together, I will. It was no question," Sofia said.

Dashoan, a math teacher, and Sofia, a social worker, said they have a lot to teach their children.

"We're going to build their faith up, we're going to build them educationally," Dashoan said. "We're going to get them active in a sport or an activity, or something extracurricular. And we're going to love each other so, we're going to do all of it."

Sofia told ABC News that their home is now "full" and "happy."

"We're having a blast every day, all the time," Sofia said. "I think you have to have a heart for what we're doing and we have the heart. All children deserve to have a mama and a daddy."
