When Vision Was Out of Reach

In a small town in Chiapas, Mexico, life for two little sisters drastically changed when both Fatima and Candy began to lose their sight.  “Fatima was fine, playing, going to kindergarten. Then her teacher called.  She said, ‘Something’s going on. She is not focusing anymore. She just sits there and scribbles.’ That’s when I knew something was wrong.”

At the clinic , the doctor diagnosed Fatima with juvenile cataracts in both eyes.  Without surgery, she could lose sight. Then it happened to Candy. “I started seeing the same signs in Candy. Her vision kept getting worse and now she can only see silhouettes. They hold onto the walls to move or hold hands and move slowly.  Sometimes they stay in one place because they are afraid.”

“All I see are blurry shadows in front of my eyes,” said Candy. “It feels like night is coming. I think, ‘Oh no. Is it getting dark already?’”

“They still try to play, but they often bump into things. Mostly they go to a corner and hide because they don’t feel safe. When they’re scared, they grab my hand and ask ‘Mom, why did you turn off the lights? Will we be able to see again?’ At that moment… it breaks you.”

As a single parent raising the girls with help from her mom, Rosa said that paying for surgery for even one of the girls was impossible.  Then thanks to YOU, Operation Blessing stepped in a paid for both sisters to receive the surgery they needed to restore their sight!

“Now they are filled with joy!” said Rosa. “They run and play and paint again. It’s like they are different people.”

I was really happy when I first saw the light,” exclaimed Candy. Beforeit was dark and scary, but now I see the colors, all kinds of shapes, and my family. Now I can see everything!”

Before we said goodbye, Operation Blessing took the opportunity to say a prayer with the family, where they recommitted their lives to Jesus Christ.

Thank you, Operation Blessing for changing the life of my children with their surgeries!” said a grateful Rosa.
