A Medical Crisis for a Child

Dara is 7-year-old boy from a remote village in Cambodia.  A few years ago, he developed a large painful hernia which made it hard for him to keep up with other kids his age. “Whenever I tried to run I got tired really fast,” he told us. “My right side would hurt a lot, especially when the weather got cold.”

Like kids his age, Dara took poured water over his head several times a day to cool off.  He said that made the hernia even more painful. “We would put an ice pack in the place where it was swelling,” said Keo, his mother. “Sometimes he was pale and sometimes he wouldn’t  eat because it hurt so much.”

One day Dara’s mom discovered the hernia had grown to the size of a lemon.  She rushed him to a local health center, but the staff could not help. “The doctor told us he needed surgery.  To be safe, you need to take him to a city hospital,” Keo explained.

But money was tight. The family harvested crops part time twice a year.

“We tried saving for the surgery, but we only had $50. We went to the public hospital in the city. They told us to wait for a call. We waited and waited… but no one ever called,” recalled Keo.

Then thanks to YOU Operation Blessing paid for Dara to receive the surgery he needed to repair his hernia.   The operation was successful, and Dara is no longer suffering.

“I am so happy after the surgery,”said Keo. “He is different now. He smiles a lot. He runs and does not get tired. He also has gained weight.  Thank you Operation Blessing supporters for covering our travel and the cost of the surgery!

“I am so happy now,” beamed Dara. “I am not feeling any pain at all. Thank you Operation Blessing!”
