A Safe Place in a Dangerous Area

Recently, Terry Meeuwsen traveled to the island of Costa Rica, a favorite destination for tourists from the US.  However, she visited a more dangerous spot, one that tourists don’t often visit. Her report begins on a sidewalk in that dangerous location.

Here in this dangerous neighborhood, one of the most vulnerable in Costa Rica, some children go without food. This is where we first met Jockson, his sister and their mom Laura who is a single parent. Laura is afraid for her kids, especially when she leaves to sell items to commuters on the streets.

“I know the risks that children and young people face, and the influence that the streets has on them,” Laura told us. “So that makes me try to protect them even more.”

With her limited income Laura can barely afford rent. Most days there’s not enough left to buy food.  “Most times at home we are out of milk, eggs, and bread,” Laura’s young son Jockson said. “It would be nice to have more food to eat.”

That’s when, thanks to your support, Laura found an afterschool program that met BOTH of her needs: Food, and a Safe Place for her children to stay while she works. It’s a program sponsored by Operation Blessing’s children’s program Orphan's Promise.  Here children have a safe place to play, they receive hot meals, tutoring and a chance to hear the Gospel through CBN’s Superbook programs.

“This opportunity was the door I needed to go through and find God's blessing for me and my children!” declared Laura.

Thanks to you, this strategically placed afterschool program will continue to provide tutoring, meals, and a safe place for kids to grow up among friends and a loving staff.  “When I have to work, I can do so in peace, because they are in a safe place where they can enjoy being children,” said the grateful single mom.

“I am very grateful to the people who gave us this center where I can eat and play.  Thank you!” added Jockson.
