Jesus Gave Me a Better Life

When Grandma Nok’s (nukk) husband abandoned the family, it fell to Nok and her daughter to raise her 2 grandchildren and pay off a significant gambling debt left by her husband.  “I had to sell my motorcycle and cart. Then I had to sell a small plot of land. I felt trapped and hopeless,” said Grandma.

Grandma sold secondhand clothing. Her daughter, Peeranan, washes dishes at a restaurant. Their combined daily income is about sixteen dollars. It was not enough to pay interest on the loans AND buy food for the children. “Sometimes, we ate only one egg the whole day,” recalled Oat, Nok’s 11-year-old grandson. “I got so hungry that I can hardly bear it.”

Then Oat joined an after-school program sponsored Operation Blessing’s children’s program: Orphan’s Promise. There, he received healthy meals and watched Superbook Bible stories. After seeing the story of Jesus resurrection, Oat prayed to become a Christian. Then he invited his sister and two of their friends to watch Superbook with him. He also shared his new faith with Grandma. “I told Grandma that in the Superbook story, Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins. He sacrificed His life because He loves us.”

“I said, ‘We were born Buddhist. How can you believe in Jesus?’ But because we were suffering, I prayed to Jesus for help,” said Grandma Nok.

Soon after that prayer, Orphan’s Promise provided a cart, cabinet and the food supplies Grandma needed to start a food business. Her income has doubled, her grandkids no longer go hungry, and she was finally able to pay off her husband’s debt!  Grandma now attends church with the kids and she’s prayed to become a Christian, too.

“Jesus answered my prayers! He rescued us just in time through Superbook and Orphan’s Promise!” said Grandma.  “Jesus gave us a better life,” added Oat. “I’m so happy to be a child of God. Thank you!”
