When It’s Humanly Impossible

8-year-old Gustavo lives in Guatemala with his two siblings and his mom, who is a single parent. About two years ago, he started struggling in school. He said it seemed like he was losing his sight. “I struggled to read AND write,” he said.  “I could not see the letters or numbers well.”   

“To see, he has to get close to the page and then he squints his eyes,” added Claudia, his mom. “He told me that bright lights made his eyes hurt.” 
 
As a single mom, Claudia makes and sells tortillas to earn money to provide for her children.  She earns $6 a day and has not been able to save enough, even to take her son to the doctor for an eye exam. Then Claudia noticed that Gustavo started to struggle with simple tasks. “He would trip and fall a lot when he was playing.  He did not run with confidence like the other kids. Finally I ended up borrowing money with high interest to take him to an eye doctor.”
 
The doctor told Claudia that her son had developed juvenile cataracts in both eyes.  She added that it could only be fixed with surgery.  Claudia knew she could never afford that.  
“We started cutting back on food. We only ate tortillas,” she said glancing at the ground. “I needed to pay off the first debt so I can try to borrow money again for my son to have surgery.”

But the young Gustavo was full of faith! “I prayed and said, ‘God will you please fix my eyes.’” 
 
Then, thanks to YOU God answered the boy’s prayer when Operation Blessing paid for Gustavo to receive two surgeries to remove the cataracts his eyes;  We replaced them with new inner ocular lenses.  

“He is a joyful kid and his life has changed!” declared the grateful mother. “Now he can play and run. Thank you for helping my son!” 

“I am so happy! Thank God I can see again,” added the 8-year-old.” 
“And thanks to the people who paid for my surgery. Thank you!”
