A Simple Surgery Changed His Life Forever

Mandisi is retired and lives a quiet life in a rural part of South Africa. When his vision began to deteriorate, even simple, everyday tasks became a challenge.

“About a year ago my sight became very bad. I can tell when someone is standing in front of me, but I can’t see who it is. I recognize people by their voices now. I can move around inside my house because I remember how it looked when I could still see. I try to do things on my own,  but it takes a long time and I can’t tell what things look like. I am not happy. I depend on my family to help me.” - Mandisi

His son, Masari, helps to take care of him.

“He gets frustrated easily. He used to love being in his garden every day. In the community, they sometimes tease him when he’s looking for his sheep. When he asks for help, they point in the wrong direction and laugh – or treat him like a child and not give him the respect he deserves. But he just laughs it off.” - Masari (son)

“I worry a lot, but I pray often. I thank God that I haven’t been hurt because I cannot see. Sometimes, I ask Him if I might see, even just a little. I’m a hopeful person, and I trust that God will take care of me.” - Mandisi
