Disaster Strikes! A Veteran’s Road to Restoration

When devastating floods hit western North Carolina, Phillip found himself surrounded by destruction. “Nobody seen that flood coming. We knew it was going to rain and be windy, but we didn’t dream what western North Carolina was getting ready to have happen. I don’t think anybody did.”

As a disabled veteran with physical limitations, Phillip faced overwhelming cleanup. “I’m supposed to work in small doses because it can raise your blood pressure, and it can affect my head. What little bit I’ve been trying to do has been in what little bit of spare time I haven’t had. But, it’s been slow.”

That’s when Operation Blessing volunteers arrived with chainsaws and helping hands. Phillip shares how he felt, “I don’t know how many people showed up – it was a lot. And finished it and did more today than I’ve done since this all started.”

As teams cleared debris and fallen trees, Phillip experienced not just physical help, but spiritual encouragement. “I’ve been prayed for so many times today I can’t even tell you. That was amazing. There were so many volunteers. Then the guy with the chainsaw worked all day. And it was just a good feeling. It is a huge relief.”

Thanks to Operation Blessing’s partners and volunteers, what would have taken Phillip so long to complete was finished in a single day. And the impact reaches far beyond his own yard.
“Operation Blessing has been there. And it’s been amazing. There are people here who are still living in tents. And Operation Blessing’s been feeding, helping, cleaning up debris, trying to get them back on their feed.”
