The Storm Took Everything
Hurricane Melissa destroyed parts of Jamaica. Mickella and her family lost their home and all the equipment needed for their small baked goods business.
Mickella said, “I just started going around picking up stuff that wasn’t broken that I could maybe wash and reuse.”
They found a tent to use as shelter for a week. Then a neighbor offered them a single room to temporarily stay.
“My family is the size of five. I’ve never been in a single room with my children before. So, the living condition is not what we had before,” explained Mickella.
Despite her circumstances, Mickella decided to volunteer with Operation Blessing to help families in her community.
Mickella said, “Just the joy that you see on a person’s face when you’re able to assist them to give them a little this or a little that. The appreciation that they showed. I found a purpose. The purpose of giving back even when I don’t have anything for myself.”
When Operation Blessing and our partners began building homes, we found out that Mickella’s family also needed one. Even her little one pitched in during the finishing touches.
Mickella said, “It has been a blessing that we have received back a roof over our head.”
Operation Blessing then surprised them with a new oven, mixer, and other supplies needed to restart their baked goods business.
“My family and myself personally is truly grateful for what Operation Blessing has done for us,” Mickella said. “So, throughout this journey, several months after Hurricane Melissa took away everything that we had, we’re beyond grateful. And I’m so happy!”
