Trading Crushing Debt for Financial Freedom

Donna Alderson became a Christian through the ministry of CBN when she was 30 years old. She remembers, “One night I prayed, It was in January, I remember it vividly, and I said, Lord, Pat Robertson keeps talking about a personal relationship. I want it. And immediately I felt this peace, this joy, and I began, my prayer language just came fluently just like that.”

Though she’d grown up in church, the sermons didn’t mean much to her. 

Now, as a Christian, she took them to heart especially about tithing. 

“This was the first time I had heard the sermon about tithing and bringing all the tithe into the storehouse so that there may be meat in my house.” She says, “And I remember the first time I tithed  I had 95 cents left in my checking account. I needed groceries, I needed gas. But I said, ‘okay, I'm gonna trust you because you said that you would rebuke the devourer.’ I said, ‘so we'll see what you do here. I'm trusting you.’”

God showed his faithfulness the very next day when donna had a meeting with her boss. Donna says, “He called me in and told me that I was being, promoted to the next step. And it was exactly $95 more a month, the Lord multiplied that 95 cents 100-fold immediately. Immediately.”

At that time, donna mostly used credit cards and usually couldn’t pay off the balance each month.  By now her debt had grown out-of-control. “Terrible, It was $25,000 and I was charging everything, everything.” She says. 

She quit using cards, then committed to giving first, and trusting God with her finances. Donna says, “And I was out of debt in two and a half years. And not only outta credit card debt, but my car was paid off also. once you're free and out of debt, you don't want to go back in.”

Donna has been a faithful partner with CBN since 1983. She says, “I watch it on the app, the CBN family app. And I love it because it has all the dates and if I miss one, I can go back and, and, and watch it. Yes, I watch it every day. I was riding down the road one day and I saw this big truck come by and it said, Operation Blessing. I was like, ‘yes, I, I'm a part of Operation Blessing.’  I like to see what CBN does. I like to give the ministries that, you know, help others that are in need.”

Her career in Human Resources has brought several promotions and advancements. Each new job came with significant raises and bonuses. When she retired, Donna had one main desire. She says, “My retirement goal was to have enough money so that I would not have to decrease my tithe nor my giving. And that's what I did and praise God he's taking care of me now and I don't have to worry about anything, don't have to worry about, not being able to meet any need.”

Reflecting on her life, Donna says God has always been faithful and provided for her every need. “All of his promises are yes and amen. And when I said, ‘I'm gonna try it because your Word says that you'll open up the windows of Heaven and I won't be able to receive all the blessings.’ That's exactly what he did. His goodness is just unsearchable. He's good. He's a good, good father.”
