Vatican Hosting Summit for Syrian Peace
The Vatican will host a brainstorming workshop on January 13 to discuss bringing peace to Syria.
Experts from the U.S, Russia and other countries will discuss how to bring about a cease-fire so humanitarian aid can be delivered. Speakers of the workshop include former British prime minister Tony Blair, and Mohamed ElBaradei, an Egyptian who is a former chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
They'll also talk about how to end the persecution of Christians there. Christians are concerned they're being targeted by Islamic extremists who want to oust President Bashar Assad.
U.N. Backed peace talks between the Syrian government and opposition leaders are scheduled for Jan. 24 in Geneva. It will be the first time in three years representatives from the Syrian regime and opposition forces will sit down together.
