Jesus Dome Destruction Comparable to Collapsing Twin Towers
The fire the brought down the Jesus Dome in Durban, South Africa, is being compared to the falling of the Twin Towers, according to a recent East Coast Radio report.
The church was destroyed by the flames this week and the cause of the fire is currently still being investigated.
Photographer and TV producer Andreas Mathios who works for the Durban Christian Centre said the entire infrastructure is destroyed inside the Dome as well as the TV ministry offices located inside the building.
"The closest comparison I can make to what I am looking at right in front of me right now - is it looks like the Twin Towers have come down all over again. I am looking at a decimated Jesus Dome where the wrangled damage to the infrastructure has brought the aluminum roof crashing to the ground," Mathios said.
Pastor Llewellyn Roberts, son of church founder Fred Roberts, said his father was devastated. His parents have been working in ministry for more than 60 years.
After attending an Assemblies of God college in the 1950s in Europe, Fred Roberts dedicated himself to ministry and later developed the Durban Christian Centre in 1979.
"God gave him a vision to build an eight-sided structure which would be a house of prayers for all nations," his son said. "And that is how the 6,000-seater initially started."
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
"We have very little information on what happened," Llewellyn Roberts said. "The place has been cordoned off and they are at the scene, assessing the damage and trying to figure out how the fire started."
