'Selma' Middle of the Road for Family Friendliness
The big movie releasing this weekend, "Selma," might be a good option for a family visit to the theater.
The story follows Martin Luther King, Jr. during his civil rights movement and earned three out of five stars from Plugged In Online movie reviewer Paul Asay.
Positive elements include spotlighting King's dedication to nonviolence and his leadership in the civil rights movement.
"When we hear about the Civil Rights Movement and King's commitment to nonviolence, we naturally concentrate on the innocent part," Asay wrote. "True, King himself wasn't so pure in his personal life, but when it came to the Movement, he stressed how important it was to take the moral high ground: Protestors should not fight back, no matter how much they might be roughed up and abused."
However, critics note that for some families the language in "Selma" might be a deal breaker. If that's the case, there are still a number of good movies that came out during the Christmas season, like "Unbroken," "Annie" and "Into the Woods."
