Tim Tebow is now a part of the New York Mets baseball family.

He signed a minor league deal with the Mets, according to the team's announcement this week.

Tebow hopes to eventually make the major leagues as a corner outfielder.

He will begin his baseball journey in Port St. Lucie, Fla., home of the Mets' spring training facility. He will a crash course in professional baseball there while playing in instructional league games.

Tebow has a long road before possibly entering the major leagues. The 6 foot 3 in, 260-pound athlete has "impressive batting practice power," according to reports, but struggles against former major league pitchers in live hitting.

At 29 years old the former NFL football player and Heisman Trophy winner has not played baseball since 2004, during his junior year of high school in Florida.

He is also older in comparison to other major league baseball players by about five to seven years. Despite the age gap, the Mets organization is betting on Tebow being a good player.

Sandy Alderson, the Mets general manager, praised Tebow for his athleticism and character.

"We are extremely intrigued with the potential that Tim has. He has demonstrated over his athletic career that he is a tremendous athlete, has got character, a competitive spirit," Alderson said. "Aside from the age, this is a classic player-development opportunity for us. As an organization, we're going to provide that development opportunity for Tim."

The Mets were among other teams who showed interest in Tebow. The Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves also told USA Today they saw Tebow as a legitimate prospect.
