The gunman who shot and killed 12 people inside a Colorado movie theater could face the death penalty.

After deliberating just 12.5 hours, a jury found James Holmes guilty Thursday on 24 counts of first degree murder.

Holmes also injured 70 others in the chilling 2012 attack. It happened in Aurora, Colorado, at a midnight premier of a Batman movie.

Holmes, who showed no reaction to the verdict, had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

But prosecutors said Holmes knew right from wrong and that the shooting was premeditated.

"That guy was sane and he needs to be held accountable for what he did," prosecutor George Brauchler said.

Sentencing is slated to begin next week.
