Fatal Crash at LaGuardia Sends More Than 40 to the Hospital
New York's LaGuardia Airport is shut down after a deadly accident on the tarmac overnight. Two pilots died when an Air Canada Express flight collided with a fire truck. Shortly after landing at 11:40 pm, the plane hit the truck nose-first.
Authorities say around 40 passengers and crew members aboard the flight were taken to the hospital, some with serious injuries.
The vehicle was apparently given permission to cross the runway. The fire truck was traveling across the runway to respond to a separate incident aboard a United Airlines flight, whose pilot had reported “an issue with odor.” The airport will be closed until about 2 o'clock this afternoon.
LaGuardia is one of 35 major airports across the country equipped with an advanced surface surveillance system that uses radar and data from locator systems on planes to alert controllers to potential conflicts on runways.
