The Smile He’d Waited For

6-year-old Saw Shee was born with a cleft lip. His mom, Ni Ni, said it’s been taking an emotional toll on the young boy. “Other children say to him, ‘Your lip looks strange. Don’t play with us.’ He just stays silent. It breaks my heart.”

“When I go outside,” said Saw Shee, “People stare at me. Other kids call me names. It makes me very sad. I always keep my head down, so they don’t see my face.”

Ni Ni and her husband, Aye, work hard as farm laborers in Myanmar. With 4 children, there was never enough to set aside much for his surgery.  “When I think of his future, my heart grows heavy,” said Ni Ni. “I’m afraid that when we’re no longer here for him, people will keep bullying him.”

Saw Shee and his family are Christians.

“Whenever I ask my parents if I can get surgery, Mom says we should pray and trust God. So I ask God, ‘Please fix my cleft lip and palate,’” said Saw Shee.

Then their pastor told them about Operation Blessing. Thanks to you, we paid for Saw Shee to receive surgery to repair his lip and palate. The operation was a success and now, he goes out every day to play with his new friends.

“His lip looks beautiful!” his mom told us. “When people say, ‘Oh, his lips are fixed now,’ his face lights up with a smile. Seeing him so happy is wonderful! I’m endlessly grateful to the people who gave to Operation Blessing.”

“Thank you very much for helping me!” echoed Saw Shee with a smile.
