Saving for Surgery-But Never Enough

Jing loves her big sister, Nuo.

She explains, “Nuo used to give me a flower every day and tell me to keep smiling.”

Jing needed the encouragement.  She was born with a hole in her heart and was sick a lot.

“She didn't have much of an appetite, so she was very thin.  Her face and lips were pale, and she was sad,” her mother shares.

“When I tried to run, I could barely breathe,” Jing remembers.  “And I could only skip rope a couple times before my heart started racing.”

Still, nothing kept Jing from doing things with her sister, even riding bikes.  Yet Jing fell, and from then on, she had to stay at  home.

She says, “I was miserable and just wanted to cry.  But when I cried, my heart beat fast like a drum, and I couldn’t catch my breath.  My head was hot, and all I could do was lie in bed.”

Mrs. Yang recalls, “She had no strength.  When I put my ear on her chest, I heard a harsh rustling noise.”

“I was worried about my sister,” Nuo shares.  “So, I did funny dances and said things to try to make her laugh, but she wouldn’t even smile.”

After several bouts of pneumonia and extended stays at the hospital, doctors said Jing needed surgery as soon as possible.

Her mother explains, “One side of her heart had begun to expand.  With more and more regurgitation, her heart could fail at any time.”

Nuo wrote Jing notes and kept cheering her on.

“I wanted her to know that as long as she didn’t give up, there was hope and she could get better,” Nuo reports.

All the while, Mr. Yang farmed and worked in construction out of town to save for surgery, but it was never enough.

He confesses, “The money I sent back was just a drop in the bucket.  I was scared that Jing’s fragile little body wasn’t going to make it.”

Mrs. Yang weeps, “Would we have to watch her die?  I hoped for a miracle.”

Then, a friend told the family about Operation Blessing, and you helped Jing get surgery.

“She can finally run and play like other children.  And she’s always smiling,” her father exclaims.

Her mother adds, “Now, Jing has a good appetite, and she’s gained weight.  No matter how long she plays, she doesn’t get tired.”

“I'm great now,” Jing says.  “I’m happy and full of energy every day.  It’s something I never experienced before.”

Nuo concludes, “Now Jing and I will be together forever.  Thank you to the nice people at Operation Blessing for your help.  You’re like angels.”
