Courage in the Dark

Courage in the Dark is a short but powerful memoir that traces Oscar Tshiebwe’s journey from extreme hardship in the Democratic Republic of Congo to becoming an elite basketball player in the United States. More than a sports story, the book is a testimony of faith, perseverance, and purpose. It emphasizes that true courage is not found in success or comfort, but in enduring suffering while continuing to trust God.

Early Life in Congo: Poverty, Responsibility, and Loss

The book begins by painting a vivid picture of Tshiebwe’s childhood in Congo. He grows up in deep poverty, where daily life involves physical labor and survival challenges. As a young boy, he carries heavy loads—both literally and emotionally—helping support his family from an early age. His upbringing is shaped by strong family values and faith, but also by instability and hardship. One of the most defining moments in his life is the death of his father when Oscar was just 12 years old. This loss deeply shakes him and forces him to confront both grief and responsibility at a young age. “I was mad at God,” Tshiebwe admits. “My daddy was helping people and God took him. But I kept talking to God and my father told me to never lose God right before he passed. I never forgot that,” Tshiebwe said. “I always remember him telling me when you give everything to God he is going to help you.” Instead of collapsing under the weight of this tragedy, Tshiebwe makes a personal commitment: he will rise above his circumstances, honor his family, and live with purpose. This decision becomes the foundation for everything that follows. 

Faith as a Foundation

A central theme throughout the book is Tshiebwe’s Christian faith. He does not present his journey as one of self-made success, but as one guided by God’s hand. Faith is what sustains him in the darkest seasons—when resources are scarce, when opportunities seem impossible, and when grief threatens to overwhelm him. He repeatedly emphasizes that courage is not the absence of fear or hardship. Instead, it is choosing to believe—especially when circumstances suggest otherwise. The “dark” in the title represents seasons of uncertainty, pain, and doubt, while “courage” represents the decision to keep trusting God through them. “Even in the darkest moments, there is still hope. Light comes, but you have to hold on through the night,” Tshiebwe says.  

Discovering Basketball: A Pathway to Purpose

Tshiebwe eventually discovers basketball, which becomes a turning point in his life. What begins as a simple opportunity grows into a calling. Through discipline, hard work, and perseverance, he develops his talent despite limited resources and exposure. Basketball becomes more than a sport—it becomes a vehicle for transformation. It opens doors that once seemed unreachable, including the chance to leave Congo and pursue opportunities abroad. However, the book makes clear that basketball is not the ultimate goal. Rather, it is part of a larger purpose: to use his platform, influence, and story to inspire others and glorify God.

Transition to America: Challenges and Growth

Moving to the United States marks another major transition filled with both opportunity and difficulty. Tshiebwe must adapt to a new culture, language, and level of competition. The adjustment is not easy—he faces moments of doubt, loneliness, and pressure. Yet these challenges refine him. He learns resilience, discipline, and humility. His success on the basketball court—eventually competing at the highest collegiate levels—comes through consistent effort and a refusal to give up. Importantly, he does not attribute his achievements solely to talent. Instead, he emphasizes perseverance and faith as the driving forces behind his growth. “I didn’t get here by myself—God and others carried me along the way,” Tshiebwe emphasizes. “Never forget where you came from.”

Redefining Success

One of the most striking messages in the book is that Tshiebwe intentionally shifts the definition of success. While many might view his rise—from poverty to international basketball—as the central achievement, he downplays fame and accolades. Instead, he frames success as: Staying faithful to God, living with integrity and purpose, persevering through adversity, and encouraging others through his story. The book consistently reminds readers that external success is temporary, but spiritual strength and character are lasting.  “Success is not fame or trophies—it’s being faithful to what God calls you to do,” Tshiebwe says. ‘Winning in life is about who you become, not what you achieve.”

The Role of Adversity

Adversity is not presented as an obstacle to avoid, but as a necessary part of growth. Tshiebwe suggests that the hardest seasons are often where the most important transformation occurs. The “dark” moments in his life—loss, poverty, uncertainty—are the very conditions that shape his character and deepen his faith. “Nothing in my life came easy—but I refused to quit,” Tshiebwe says. “You keep working, even when no one sees it.” He argues that courage is forged in these moments, not in times of comfort. This perspective reframes suffering: instead of asking “Why is this happening?” he encourages readers to ask, “What is God building in me through this?”

What began as a mission to save his family becomes something greater—a spiritual awakening that may outshine his NBA dream. His improbable rise from immigrant outsider to unanimous college basketball National Player of the Year and burgeoning evangelist is the stuff of legend.
