Early Life: Talent Shaped by Pain

Darryl Strawberry was born on March 12, 1962, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in a difficult home environment marked by instability and abuse, particularly from his alcoholic father. These early experiences deeply affected him, creating emotional wounds that would follow him into adulthood. Despite these challenges, Darryl showed extraordinary athletic ability from a young age. Baseball became both an escape and a source of identity. His natural talent, especially his powerful swing and imposing presence, quickly set him apart as a future star. By the time he reached high school, he was already being recognized as one of the most promising baseball prospects in the country.

Rise to Stardom: The Mets Years

Darryl was selected as the first overall pick in the 1980 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Mets. He made his major league debut in 1983 and immediately lived up to expectations, winning the National League “Rookie of the Year: award. Throughout the 1980s, he became one of the brightest stars in baseball:

• Eight-time All-Star

• Known for his powerful home runs and smooth left-handed swing

• A central figure in the Mets’ success

His career peaked during the Mets’ 1986 season, when the team won the World Series. Darryl was a key contributor to that championship run, cementing his place among baseball’s elite players. However, even during this period of success, trouble was brewing beneath the surface.    “I kept trying to fix the outside while everything on the inside was falling apart,” he admits.

Success and Struggles: Fame’s Dark Side

As Darryl’s fame grew, so did his personal struggles. He began to battle substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs, and became involved in a lifestyle marked by excess and poor decisions. “Addiction doesn’t just take what you have—it takes who you are,” he says.  He later played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees, winning additional World Series titles with the Yankees in the late 1990s. On the field, he remained highly talented, but his career became increasingly inconsistent due to injuries and off-field issues. His struggles led to: suspensions from baseball, legal troubles - including arrests, failed relationships, and personal instability. Darryl’s life became a stark contrast: public success paired with private turmoil.  “I was successful on the field, but I was losing in life,” he confesses. “The pain I never dealt with became the behavior I couldn’t control.”

Collapse: Addiction, Legal Trouble, and Health Battles

By the late 1990s and early 2000s, Darryl’s life had largely unraveled. His addiction worsened, leading to repeated relapses and time in rehabilitation programs. He also faced significant legal consequences, including jail time. In addition to these struggles, he faced serious health challenges.  Darryl was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1998 and later with kidney cancer. These experiences forced him to confront his mortality and the direction of his life. This period represents the lowest point in his journey—a time marked by loss, regret, and brokenness. His baseball career was effectively over, and his personal life was in disarray.  “There comes a moment when you have to stop blaming everybody else and face yourself,” Darryl says.  “I looked in the mirror and realized the problem wasn’t out there—it was me.”

Turning Point: Faith and Transformation

The defining shift in Darryl’s life came through a spiritual awakening. Influenced by his mother’s faith and the support of others around him, he began to pursue a relationship with God and to take responsibility for his past. A key figure in this transformation was his wife, Tracy Strawberry, who supported him through recovery and encouraged his spiritual growth. This change was not immediate or easy. It involved: confronting past trauma, committing to sobriety, rebuilding relationships, and developing discipline and accountability. Over time, Darryl experienced what he describes as a complete transformation—not just behaviorally, but internally. He began to redefine his identity, no longer as a baseball star, but as someone with a deeper purpose. “Rock bottom became the place where truth finally got my attention.  God wasn’t waiting for me to get it right—He was waiting for me to surrender,” he says.

A New Life: Ministry and Service

After his recovery, Darryl entered a new phase of life focused on helping others. He became an ordained minister and co-founded Strawberry Ministries with his wife. In this role, he speaks at churches, conferences, and events, visits prisons, rehabilitation centers, and hospitals, and shares his story to inspire hope and transformation. His message centers on redemption, faith, and the possibility of change. He often emphasizes that his past struggles now serve a purpose in helping others overcome their own challenges. “I found out that real freedom doesn’t come from trying harder, but from letting go. Grace met me in the middle of my mess, not after I cleaned it up. My life didn’t change overnight, but my direction did when I gave it to God.”

As a player, he is remembered as one of the most naturally gifted hitters of his era. His achievements on the field—including multiple World Series titles and All-Star appearances—secure his place in baseball history. But increasingly, his legacy extends beyond sports. Today, Darryl is known for his openness about addiction, his faith, and his commitment to helping others. He uses his story as a testimony that even the most broken situations can be restored.

New Book Coming Out

Darryl’s latest book, Another Life: Discovering the Healing Power of Purpose on My Long Journey from Player to Preacher releases on August 11, 2026.  With four World Series rings, baseball legend Darryl Strawberry is one of the greatest hitters in the long history of the New York Mets, with a home-run record that held for 37 years. But Darryl’s success on the baseball field came hand-in-hand with personal challenges that included substance abuse, divorces, cancer, and jail time. Two decades ago, he overcame the demons brought on by his childhood traumas and found true redemption and restoration. Today, as an ordained Minister of the Gospel, his purpose and passion is helping others transform their lives. Another Life takes readers on the road with Darryl as he travels around the country with his son Jordan, preaching 270 days a year at motivational conferences and churches, and in schools, prisons, and hospitals. Strawberry’s life experiences show us that we all can heal what’s broken and hurting on the inside, and that our physical health is as important as our emotional and spiritual health.  He reflects on the invaluable lessons he’s learned—and the deep-rooted values and principles he’s gained—through hard experience, the powerful living examples of his mother Ruby and wife Tracy, and his eventual acceptance of Christ’s unconditional love. Everyone knows Darryl Strawberry as the home-run king. Another Life shares Darryl’s true legacy as a minister, father, and a believer in restoration, redemption, and starting over.
