From Pain to Purpose: Lysa TerKeurst’s Story of Redemption
PERSONIFICATION OF GRACE, KINDNESS, WISDOM WITH A PINCH OF SOUTHERN CHARM
Lisa Terkkeurst’s friends, family, and work associates describe her in glowing terms. They include words like “genuine, honest, and humble. “They say those traits haven’t changed as Lysa skyrocketed to notoriety to became one of the most prominent female Christian voices today. Once fans find her, they rarely leave, hungry for more of her biblical wisdom, practical advice, spiced with wit and humor. In recent years, fans and family have seen Lysa’s heart shattered over her very public divorce from her first husband, and the father of her five children.
“HOME IS WHERE I HAVE BEEN BROKEN APART AND PUT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN.”
Lysa says home has been the source of her greatest joys and her greatest suffering. She was born into a close-knit, loving family in Tallahassee, Florida. Her idyllic childhood took a dramatic turn in her formative years when her parents decided to divorce. “It shattered my innocent belief in an unbreakable family. Then, tragedy again, with the sudden loss of her 16-month-old sister. Lysa began to question the goodness of God and for several years, departed from her spiritual roots and faith in God. She did not wander for long. She attended Furman University where she was challenged to discover a deeper, more authentic faith. She committed herself to God anew, and this time with the understanding “I would never have all the answers or always be shielded from pain.” She cultivated her gifts and talents for effective communication and ministry. Then she joined forces with two like minded young women to build Proverbs 31 Ministries. After Lysa’s first book was published “Living Life on Purpose” it received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. The popularity of her first book solidified her place within the Christian author community.
In college, Lysa met her first husband Art. She had dreams of a “happily ever after.” It was not to be. One after another, their children were welcomed into the world; a world where Lysa felt increasingly unsafe. She discovered Art was unfaithful. “It shattered my trust. I did not know whether to fight for restoration or walk away” She stayed, believing their marriage could be healed. Months of therapy and counseling brought no change. “I realized his actions were not changing. It became a cycle of broken promises, unfaithfulness, and substance abuse.”
In 2022 Lysa made the heart wrenching announcement that she was ending her 29-year-old marriage. Raw and broken, she courageously told the story on social media and other areas of ministry she directed. She was gut level honest and vulnerable. She says she leaned heavily on her faith and her community of Christian friends and forged on. She says candidly, “My heart struggled to make peace between God’s ability to change hard things and his apparent decision not to change them for me.” She continued writing on deep issues of faith e.g., how to recover from rejection, how to forgive the person who wounded you. “I want my readers to feel seen and heard and know they are not alone,” She has raw, candid conversations about divorce as a Christian on her podcast, “Theology and Therapy.” My goal, no matter what the topic, is to inspire and uplift my readers,” offering tangible guidance and renewed hope.”
Lysa says she’s humbled by the many fans and supporters who stuck with her through the worst of times. She is still writing, speaking, and garnering awards like the “Champions of Faith Authors award.” She is still a sought-after speaker with numerous invitations to prestigious events. In the last several years, she has been a featured keynote presenter at more than forty events across America. Amid her success, she remains solidly grounded in the Lord, the one who carried her through the most heartbreaking years of her life. ‘I’ve held many things in my hands, and I’ve lost many, but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.”
In 2024, Lisa joyfully announced her re-marriage to Chaz Adams. She declares resolutely, “The pain and heartbreak will not be the end of your story. Your story is still being written. There is a big world out there full of new joys.”
