Food or Medicine—Which Would You Choose?

Imagine every time your son got sick, you had to choose between buying food and medicine. That was a normal occurrence for Adela, a single mom raising her son alone in Guatemala.  To cover household expenses, Adela washed clothes for neighbors or worked as a day laborer in the fields. She barely earned enough to buy food each day.   “With the little money I earn, I can barely buy a few pieces of bread for us to eat,” Adela recalled.

When work is scarce, she told us she stays awake  late into the night weaving traditional items like skirts and scarves to sell.  Even doing this there never seemed to be enough.  8-year-old William told us how he tried to help.  “One time I had to sell my toys to help my mom,” he said sadly.

“I don’t see how other parents can buy food for their kids. I just don´t have the resources,” said Adela.

“I want it to try other food but she couldn´t afford it,” added William.

Then, thanks to YOU, Operation Blessing invited Adela to take part in a chicken project in her community. After training her, we built a chicken coop and gave her 150 chickens, feed, medicine and other supplies to get the egg business going.  So far, she has earned 2-thousand dollars from the sale of eggs.  She has now reinvested some of that money to keep the business going.

“I feel very happy because me and my mom can eat every day!” declared William. “We can eat chicken and other meat whenever we want.”

“Thanks to the people who support Operation Blessing for giving me this business to support my family,” said Adela.
