Typhoon Terror
TAIWAN- Torrential downpours flooded southern Taiwan when Typhoon Morakot came ashore there in early August. Deadly mudslides and heavy flooding followed, leaving hundreds of villagers stranded in the mountains, without food, electricity, or transportation.
At least 123 people died in the storm and many more are still missing, some believed to be buried in mud that covered entire villages.
Operation Blessing quickly responded to the disaster, partnering with Chinese Christian Relief (CCR), a local non-governmental organization, to aid survivors.
OBI provided gas stoves and electric rice cookers, while CCR provided food. The cooking packages were distributed to 500 families who lost everything in the typhoon.
In China, where authorities said Typhoon Morakot displaced 1.4 million people, OBI partnered with the Chinese Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA). CFPA and OBI shipped 500 boxes of relief goods to Chinese victims in Fujian province. This aid included food, coats and shirts valued at over $140,000.
