Throwing Prayers, Not Stones At Donald Trump
So you may have heard that Donald Trump went to church today. He attended First Presbyterian Church in Muscatine, Iowa, Sunday morning. The Trump campaign tells The Brody File that he sang hymns, shook hands and took pictures with parishioners and made a "generous contribution to the offering plate."
The service lasted over an hour and it was a relatively small congregation. He attended with a military mom from Iowa that he has gotten to know personally.
As for subject of today’s sermon, how appropriate that it was about humility. Even Donald Trump acknowledged today at his rally that he probably needs to hear a sermon like that.
Now, some folks on social media are getting all over Trump for attending church, saying things like, "What a farce," "Con-man!" "Pandering 101," "What a hypocrite," and "Did he preach from Two Corinthians?"
Believe me, there is much more. This is just a sampling.
Hey, let’s be clear about a couple things. I don’t know who all these people are ripping Trump for attending church. If they are folks who don’t even attend church, then they get a pass because I don’t expect any less of them. But I’m sure there are plenty of evangelicals who think Trump’s trip to church is disingenuous and are disgusted by it.
Well, look, let me address all the evangelicals who like to get on Trump’s case for not being a "real Christian." First of all, if you really think he needs a closer relationship with God, then wouldn't you want him to be in church?
And even if you think he's just trying to snow everybody with this pretend version of Christianity, I would just remind you of two things: don’t be so judgmental considering it will be God, not you who will ultimately judge a man’s soul. And secondly, God is so much bigger than all of us and our feeble minds that he can use any situation for good.
Look what happened today: Trump goes to church and he hears a sermon about humility. Perfect! God has it taken of.
Look, Donald Trump is a work in progress just like all of us. He needs to hear God’s word (just like all of us) on a daily basis. He needs godly people surrounding him (just like all of us) on a daily basis. He needs to be humbled (just like all of us) on a daily basis. He needs to ask for forgiveness (just like all of us) on a daily basis. He needs to act more Christ-like (just like all of us) on a daily basis.
Does he fall short? Yes. Do I fall short? Yes. Do you fall short? C’mon. You know the answer. So let’s stop throwing stones and instead how about throwing up our hands to almighty God and praying for this man to draw closer to God through this process because whether you like it or not, he could be the next President of the United States.
