Totong is two and a half months old. Because of severe malnutrition, his cries are barely audible. Without medical care he will die in just a few days.

Totong and his family live on Basilan, a Filipino island of extreme poverty, and an area unknown to most outsiders. It is also a land of violence. For you see, the jungles of Basilan shelter the radical Islamic group called Abu Sayyaf. However, Operation Blessing medical volunteers braved rough seas, dangerous roads, and the threat of kidnapping to treat these isolated people.Totong_MD.jpg

When Totongs young mother arrived at the Operation Blessing medical clinic, she didnt know that without immediate care she would have been planning her beautiful babys funeral.

When the doctors saw him, they immediately started a life-giving IV. Little Totong was too weak to cry when the doctors inserted the needle into his tiny hand. His mother watched as the fluids pumped life into his body.

Soon, both mother and son were ushered into the cab of a makeshift ambulance and rushed to the nearest hospital eight kilometers away. The quick actions of the Operation Blessing doctors saved this babys life.

In all, more than 12,000 people were cared for on Basilan and Zamboanga by the Operation Blessing medical team. Many had not seen a doctor or dentist in years. Most longed to be touched and comforted. Totong_mom_MD.jpg

A violent and forgotten land was introduced to a loving and caring savior by a team of dedicated people -- people you helped get there. As for Totong, his mothers "thank you" says it all.
