The Rehers: A Simple Matter of Trust
CBN.com In 1998, Jerry and Roberta Reher moved to Montana to be closer to family and to simplify their lives. However, financial challenges were about to complicate everything.
“The first thing that happened was I got sick,” says Roberta.
Doctors discovered Roberta’s appendix had ruptured. She spent 13 days in the hospital. But it would take even longer to recover from the hospital bills.
Jerry says, “The medical bills were outrageous. They just kept on going and going and going.”
“The hospital felt that if I would cut back on my tithing that I could make higher payments,” says Roberta. “I basically refused to do that because I knew that as long as we tithed, the Lord would take care of us.”
Jerry and Roberta made monthly payments toward the medical debt. But their financial situation just got worse.
Their savings dwindling, Jerry returned to driving trucks. Then, just a couple of months into his new job, he ruptured two discs in his back. This led to three surgeries and more medical bills.
Even at this low point, the Rehers did not cut back on their giving. In fact, during these months, they added The 700 Club to their giving list by becoming partners.
Roberta says, “I think at that point instead of cutting back on our giving, we gave more. It just seemed like we always had money to pay our bills, always. The Lord always provided.”
Then help arrived in the mail: three separate letters from hospitals stating that nearly $30,000 of their medical debt was forgiven.
“I couldn’t believe it,” says Roberta. “I opened it up, and I read it, and I handed it to Jerry, and I said, ‘Read this. Am I reading this correctly?’ And we were both just ecstatic. It’s a miracle from the Lord.”
Even with their medical debts wiped clean, the Rehers still needed a steady source of income. They began a home-based business as distributors for a nutritional company. As with most new business owners, they struggled.
“Our finances were bad,” she says. “Nothing was really doing well. So we made a decision to really talk to the Lord and trust in Him. We needed answers.”
In an act of faith, Jerry and Roberta doubled their 700 Club monthly pledge.
Roberta says, “I listen and the Lord told us that’s what we had to do. And we did. And through us doing that, that’s when our nutritional business just exploded.”
Some may not understand why the Rehers gave so generously while going through their own financial crises. But they say it all boils down to a simple matter of trust.
“There was times when we didn’t think it made sense but we did it anyway. We just knew that it was the right thing to do,” says Roberta. “Sometimes people need to take that leap because they’ll never know what blessings or miracles are in their life until they do.”
