Masai Villagers Facing Famine

When Masai villagers in the Great Rift Valley village of Ewaso Kedong were facing famine, it took a devastating toll on families.

The Masai are cattle herders and their diet mostly consists of milk and meat. Cattle are also their main source of income—so the drought was wiping out both their primary food supply and their source of income.

OB_Masai-villages-famine2_MD.jpgTo aid these families, CBN’s Operation Blessing ran 1.5 miles of pipe from the nearby river to three cisterns, providing access to a water source for these families and their cattle—but more importantly, supplying water to a 25-acre community farm through drip irrigation, which allows the villagers to grow crops year-round.

Today, mothers like Agnus, Anne, and Susan are now growing corn, lettuce, beans, papaya, and other foods that give added nutrients to their diets. The farm is also providing a new source of income for families through the sale of their crops.
