Finding the Thing You Were Made to Do
CBN.com In 1988, Julie Roth was laid-off from her job in Dallas. Two weeks later, her husband Bob came home with the same news.
“All of a sudden they say, ‘we’re closing the office down’,” recalls Bob. ‘”Tomorrow we are leaving.’ So there I was without a job. Fear sets in.”
“I knew that something good would come out of it but at the time I was shocked,” Julie says.
“You wonder, ‘why me?’ and then a little bit of anger sets in,” Bob shares. “Well, what do I do now?” So I turned to the Lord. I said, ‘Lord, what do you want me to do?’”
Bob and Julie say God directed them to give 10 percent of their unemployment check to their church.
“Most people would say, ‘no’ don’t do that,” says Bob. “Hunker down. But we continued to tithe during that whole time. Somehow we made all those payments and to this day I don’t know how it happened.”
The couple needed to seek God this time.
“How can I discover my God-given talents and go pursue a career based upon those talents?” asks Bob rhetorically. “The Holy Spirit will give you a revelation of what that is. I realized that I was supposed to be in technology.”
Within months, Bob was hired by a major airline. Julie landed a job with another company, with a better position and higher pay!
“It was just a God-thing the way that whole thing worked out,” Julie says. “Our unemployment turned out to be a blessing.”
“I looked for a very specific position, because I knew what I had to do,” Bob recounts. “And they called me up and said, “Here it is.’“
Says Julie, “I don’t know how I was selected to go to San Francisco to open up a whole new area for the telecommunications company I was in. But I was one of many candidates. Only God can move man’s hearts on your behalf, I mean if you are really following the Lord, God will have his favor on your life. And the Lord just moved on our behalf because were continuing to give.”
Over 20 years later, Bob still works in the airline industry while Julie has a successful career in marketing and sales. They still tithe faithfully to their church, but they also give to ministries like CBN. They first became CBN partners in 1983.
Bob says, “I think the Lord speaks to your heart saying, ‘Give to this one’ or ‘Give to that one.’ CBN is one place that the Lord told me to give to.”
“CBN gives us a chance to be something bigger than what we are able to do by ourselves,” adds Julie. “Because every time there’s a catastrophe the first thing I want to do is get on a plane and go. I work full time and I can’t go. But I do know that Operation Blessing is going to be there.”
“Jesus said, “Give and it will be given to you,’” Bob says. “And I firmly believe that. I stand upon that promise.”
“God’s principles are so different from the world’s principles that when you give it away he gives it back,” Julie shares excitedly. “He owns everything any way. So we’re just giving back something that’s already His. God is so merciful and He cares so much. But He cares about all of us. We’re a family. And when we take care of each other, He’s going to take care of us.”
