The Cure for Credit Card Debt
CBN.com — George and Robin Hunnewell know all too well how quickly credit card debt can skyrocket.
Robin says, “You don’t have cash and you see something you want or think you need–swipe a card.”
“Credit card debt is a killer,” George says.
The Hunnewells' credit card debt was a third of their annual salary. Each month, they struggled to make the minimum payments and still pay their other bills on time.
“It got to the point where the electric company would send their representatives out and if I didn’t have a check ready for them when they showed up, they were going to turn me off,” Robin recalls.
In 2007, they started watching The 700 Club where they learned from Pat Robertson how to get control of their finances using biblical principles.
“When He says give and it will be given unto you … good measure, pressed down, He means it,” George says.
In obedience, the Hunnewells started tithing. A year later, George got a new job as a project manager at a power plant. It paid more than his and Robin’s previous salaries combined!
And George and Robin finally realized their dream of buying their own home.
“It’s the power of God answering His people in obedience,” Robin says.
They wanted to do even more so they joined The 700 Club. And even when George took a different position with less pay, the Hunnewells kept on giving.
“We’re supposed to give whether we have a bunch of money or a little money,” George says.
Soon, with overtime pay, George was making more than he did in his previous position. And Robin landed a job selling insurance that brought in even more income.
“I really enjoy it and we were able to increase our giving,” Robin says.
The Hunnewells also increased their pledge to CBN and are now 1000 Club members.
“When we started watching The 700 Club and they started talking about Operation Blessing and Orphan's Promise, those stories cannot help but touch you in the deepest part of your heart,” Robin says.
And the credit card debt they had–well, it’s all gone.
“We didn’t have a party, but we should have,” George says.
The Hunnewells will tell you they don’t give to get. They simply want to bless others.
“It’s not a financial blessing all the time. It’s a spiritual blessing. It’s a peace that you get from helping someone else,” Robin says. “It’s just the most wonderful feeling to know that you are the hands and feet of Christ.”
