The Birds and the Bees Talk

At what age do we have the old birds and the bees discussion?

I find myself being confronted with it all of the sudden. This is a sensitive topic that must be approached carefully, I know. I just did not plan on bunnies in our backyard being the catalyst.

We are practically the only family in the neighborhood that does not have a dog or a cat. Our yard, as a result, has become a sanctuary for wild rabbits. The nice part about this is they eat up the weeds. The downside is well, they reproduce like rabbits.

Sitting down to dinner the other night, we’re watching the rabbits from our large bay window. They’re nibbling contentedly and the girls are much amused. Suddenly, one of my daughters says “Look mom! They’re playing tag!” "Bow chicka bow bow"… went racing through my head. Great. I suppose now I’m going to have to explain things.

We got through it, with lots of embarrassing questions and “ewws”. Thankfully, their curiosity does not expand any further than the rabbits for now. Whew! Maybe we should consider just getting a dog.
