The Car Crash Should Have Killed Him, But God!
Tuesday Smith was wrapping up an ordinary morning at home in Tennessee when the phone rang. “Miss Smith, are you sitting in a quiet place?” a voice from her husband’s HR department asked. “Your husband’s been ran over and is in critical condition. You need to get here as soon as possible,” she said.
MAY 10TH, 2023. Kevin Smith was nearly finished with his job delivering cars in Baton Rouge, Louisiana – when suddenly he was struck by a speeding vehicle.
Four off-duty firemen happened to be nearby and immediately began helping Kevin.
Robin Dix, one of those firemen, remembers racing across the pavement. “I went out there and immediately found Kevin laying on the ground, in obvious distress,” he said. “I did not feel that he was going to survive. … If we did not quickly get him transported to the hospital, it was not going to be survivable.”
More emergency responders arrived and worked to keep Kevin alive. After a chest tube was inserted to inflate a collapsed lung, he was transported to the nearest trauma center.
By now, Kevin’s wife, Tuesday, was on her way from their home in Tennessee to Baton Rouge. “It took me 11 hours to get to where he was,” Tuesday said, her voice still tight at the memory. “Meanwhile they’re calling me, telling me they’re doing surgeries and to get there as soon as possible… I’m freaking out.” When she finally reached the ICU, she laid trembling hands on her husband’s battered chest and whispered, “I’m here. I’m praying with you.”
By the time she arrived at the hospital, doctors had stabilized Kevin. They were amazed he was still alive considering the severity of his injuries.
“The doctors kept calling him ‘miracle man,’ ” Tuesday recalled. “They said, ‘We have no idea how his head didn’t get injured… he didn’t even have a bruise on his belly.’”
Although he was stable, Kevin’s legs were still in jeopardy. Both were severely damaged and very little blood flow was circulating in them.
