What Happens When You Trust God With Money?
Keon and Bria Gibson are living their dreams – he’s working in content creation and she’s helping children as a speech therapist. Their careers are thriving, which they attribute to tithing being a foundation of their lives. Keon manages the social media accounts of some high-profile clients today, but before they married his career was on a very different and unfulfilling path.
“The truth about my NASA career and being an oceanographer was I did my job and I did it well, but I knew I was leaving some things on the table,” Keon said. “I just didn't have that passion to really put all my heart and my mind to it.”
He was thrilled to get the opportunity to photograph gospel artist Jonathan McReynolds during his 2019 tour. After receiving praise for his work, Keon believed it was the Lord’s will for him to leave Louisiana and jump into social media development full-time.
“I remember when God pressed it on my heart, ‘You need to go to Dallas.’ I was still struggling to try to build myself up, trying to find social media jobs,” Keon said. “A lot of them didn't work out. One of my first ever major credit cards had reached $10,000. That was way outside of my bracket of what I could afford to pay back and those sorts of things.”
Despite his significant credit card debt, Keon continued to tithe 10 percent of his income at church, a principle he learned as a child. Then came a breakthrough that allowed him pay off the $10,000 he owed.
“God aligned two opportunities up at the same time: A chief marketing officer for a law firm, and the opportunity to be a social media manager for Tribl Records,” Keon said. “That's what allowed me to pay back all that money and just really get back on the right track – it was just amazing. I really believe that it was because of my tithing at the local church that He then allowed me to transition with His grace and mercy into Dallas.”
Bria, Keon’s fiancé at the time, also took a leap of faith in relocating her job as a children’s speech therapist from Houston to Dallas. A devoted tither as well, God opened a door for her that was beyond expectations.
“’There’s some contracts available, if you would like to apply for them you can.’ It would be a big boost in my salary, about $10,000 more,” Bria said. “I had interviewed about a month, a month and a half ago, and I had to accept that I just simply may not get it. The next day I went to work and my boss was like, ‘Hey, so you know how you interviewed for this, one of the SLPs (Speech-Language Pathologist) in that position just found out she has to move. So, if you want that position, you can have it.’ I attribute that to the faithfulness of God.”
Keon and Bria married soon after, and their careers continued to advance. Keon took more affluent contracts, such as managing social media for the movie Sarah’s Oil. His company, The Creative Halo, has prospered so much recently that Bria has been able to switch to part-time work to take care of their newborn daughter. Through it all, they’ve found success by putting God first in their financial decisions.
“It feels amazing to receive God's faithfulness in my finances,” Bria said “I don't believe that you can out give God. What He asks and requires of us is honestly so small compared to what He’s so willing to give to us every single day.”
“It's just been amazing to see how God has faithfully been allowing me to just transition to different industries, different entertainment platforms, movies even now,” Keon said. “I would definitely encourage people to give. What God has given us, we can't be stingy with it. It's for us to literally pass through our hands.”
