Hope Flows in Chiapas

In a small rural community in Chiapas, twelve families have spent years living with an uncertain and dangerous water supply.

For half the year during the dry season, water becomes scarce, making everyday tasks like drinking, bathing, and washing a daily struggle. For families like Kelli’s, even when water was available, it often came at a cost to their health.

Ten-year-old Kelli remembers what it was like.

“Sometimes when I drank the water and it had bacteria in it, my stomach would hurt,” she said. “When I ate, I felt like throwing up. And my little brother would get really sick too.”

The community’s only water source came from a shallow spring. From there, water traveled through a network of long ground hoses that frequently became clogged with dirt, leaves, and debris. The water collected in an open pool, where it was often contaminated by animal waste.

Kelli’s mother, Blanca, described the difficult process of trying to make the water usable.

“There are about eleven hoses, each around 300 feet long,” Blanca said. “We had to unclog them at every connection, shaking out sand and leaves.”

During rainy season, conditions only got worse.

“The water would turn muddy or yellow,” Blanca explained. “We strained out worms, roots, and dirt with a cloth—but it was still dirty, and we had to drink it.”

For the children, the effects were immediate.

“The water was yucky,” said Kelli’s younger brother, Ivan. “It tasted horrible. My stomach hurt, and I felt really bad.”

That’s when Operation Blessing stepped in.

Thanks to the generosity of Operation Blessing partners, a new clean water system was built for the community. A concrete reservoir now collects water and channels it into a 2,600-gallon storage tank, where it is treated with chlorine to remove harmful bacteria.

From there, clean water is piped directly to smaller tanks beside each family’s home.

For the first time, these families have reliable access to safe water, right where they live.

“When we drink water now, we don’t get stomach aches because it’s clean!” Kelli said with a smile.

For Blanca, the transformation feels life-changing.

“I’m so grateful,” she said. “What felt impossible for us, Operation Blessing made possible. Now we have clean water at our homes.”

Ivan is feeling the difference too.

“Now I’m happy because we have water, and I won’t get sick anymore,” he said. “My tummy doesn’t hurt now.”

At the dedication of the water project, the community gathered to celebrate and thank God for the blessing of clean water. It became more than a moment of physical provision—it was also a moment of spiritual impact.

As families prayed together and heard about the love of Jesus, several people made decisions to follow Christ for the very first time.

Today, clean water is doing more than improving health—it’s bringing hope to an entire community.

“Now there is always clean water for the kids to drink,” Blanca said. “Thank you for giving us this great gift.”

“Thank you so much, Operation Blessing,” Kelli added.
