Working Hard—And Still Your Child Goes Hungry

Nine-year-old Evelyn lives in a poor community in the Philippines. Like most of the kids there,  she and her siblings are underweight and malnourished. “My stomach hurts when I am hungry,” recalled the young girl.

After their father left, their mom, Vernalyn became their sole provider.  She sells bamboo souvenirs in neighboring beach towns. On a good day, she earns about $5.

“It felt like I could not do it anymore,” said Vernalyn with tears in her eyes. “But because of God, I didn’t give up.

“When  we don’t have food, she is brave and says, 'We'll just have to eat rice with salt,' added Evelyn.

To combat malnutrition and hunger among the children in the village CBN’s Orphans Promise launched a feeding program.  Over the past 2 years, we provided healthy meals, medical care, free medicine, and school supplies to eighty  children, including Evelyn and her siblings.

“I love eating vegetables and chicken!” declared Evelyn enthusiastically.

We also worked with moms in the community to start or grow their businesses.  That way, women like Vernalyn are able to provide for their children.

“It's as if i have a partner in life now, my daughter and me!” she said. “I am also grateful to everyone who helped, for the business and everything you’ve done for  to us!”

“A big thank you to you!” added Evelyn.
