Walking Miles for Unsafe Water

A small stream inside a forest in Indonesia is the main source of water for 12-year-old Fistirani (fis ter awni’) and her siblings. “Whenever we ran out of water, we had to walk far into the forest to find more. Even though it was dirty, we still used it because we had no other choice,” she told us.

After their dad passed away, Fistirani (fis ter awni’) older sister Agustina has been caring for her four younger siblings.  Their mom made the painful decision to work on another island to better support the family.  But water has been their biggest challenge.

“We had to make 5 trips a day just to get water,” said Agustina. “We used it for washing, bathing, and  drinking. I remember one day my youngest brother  broke out in a rash.  There were small bumps all over his body and it was very itchy. Almost every night, I cry and ask God, ‘Why is our life like this?’ But I have to be strong… and encourage my younger brothers and sisters not to give up.”

Then thanks to YOU, Operation Blessing came to their village and installed water harvesting systems for Agustina and 34 other families! The water is collected and chlorinated, making it safe for cooking, bathing and drinking.  “I was so happy the day we received this water tank!” said Agustina.  “Now we don’t have to walk deep into the forest anymore!”

“I’m so thankful to the people who gave to Operation Blessing to help us. Thank you. God bless you!” added a grateful Fistirani.
