A New Way to Provide

Yomara is raising her children as a single parent in a small community in Guatemala. She works hard making and selling tortillas. And she sometime builds furniture to sell to her neighbors.  There’s barely been enough income for food.  “Sometimes I buy a few eggs with beans to eat. When there are no beans, I ask God to help my kids feel full on a few bites of an egg,” she told us.

Yomara’s daughter Carla worries right along with her mom.  “My siblings tell me they are hungry.  Sometimes there is only coffee,” she added with emotion in her voice. “I tell them to wait, tomorrow we may be able to have breakfast."

Yomara remembered a time when a relative gave them a piece of chicken to share.  There was only enough for the children, so Yomara went without.  "I told them to eat. I said I was not hungry.  But a few moments later, reality set in and I realized I was starving.”

"I would like to help my mom. But I cannot,” said Carla. “I feel useless because I don't know what to do."

Then Operation Blessing learned about Yomara´s situation. Thanks to YOU, we helped her build a pig pen and taught her how to run a business raising and selling pork.  Finally, we gave her some partially grown pigs. Yomara recently butchered seven pigs and has been selling the meat from her home.

She also makes and sells prepared pork dishes and snacks along with the tortillas she makes. Sales from those pigs have generated more than $2300 in profits, which has significantly raised her family’s standard of living.

"Now we can eat meat, chicken, and many other things we couldn't do before!" declared Carla.

"Thank God the children now all have their breakfast before going to school,” said the grateful mom. "Thanks to the people who support Operation Blessing. And thank you for giving me this wonderful business!”
