After a Devastating Fire, This Sailor Got a New Start
First Class Petty Officer Courtney has proudly served aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier for 15 years. Throughout her service, she has never once regretted her decision to wear the uniform and serve her country.
“It was probably the best decision I could have made for myself, and I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot,” Courtney said.
But beyond her military career, Courtney’s greatest mission is being a mom to her two daughters. As a single mother, she has always worked hard to provide them with stability and everything they need. That’s why it was devastating when one day they came home to find their apartment on fire. Faulty wiring had sparked the blaze, and the family lost everything.
“All our clothes are gone. Our furniture’s gone. Any furniture we had is gone, and if it wasn’t burned, it was severely smoke damaged to the point where we couldn’t salvage it,” Courtney said.
Without renter’s insurance, relocating meant starting over with almost nothing — sparse furniture, no household goods, and only the bare essentials for her daughters.
“They need clothes for school and just basic essentials. It makes me feel like less of a mom,” Courtney admitted. “I’ve always prided myself on making sure my kids have everything they need — and she has a mattress on the floor.”
Desperate for help, Courtney turned to her ship’s chaplain.
“He was so friendly and welcoming. I felt like after I left outta there, no matter what the situation was, it was gonna be okay,” she said.
That conversation led Courtney to re-establish her relationship with God, a step that brought her peace during a difficult time.
“That’s what keeps me grounded and keeps me knowing like, He’s gonna make sure that my kids and I are good. And I know that, and I have to believe that,” she said.
Courtney’s prayers were answered when Helping the Home Front stepped in. CBN partners replaced her family’s clothes, restocked their household goods, and provided brand-new furniture to help them rebuild.
“Thank you. Thank you so much,” Courtney said, overwhelmed with gratitude.
Courtney went shopping to re-stock her home and visited Esprit Décor to select furniture. The owners, inspired by her service, offered a generous discount to help the local sailor.
“I’m really thankful to CBN and CBN’s partners. This has taken a huge weight off me, like a huge burden off me,” Courtney said.
With the kindness of strangers and renewed faith, Courtney and her daughters are now settling into their new home — with hope restored and hearts full of gratitude.
