Will It Be Rent or Food?

“We were struggling. By the time you’re done paying for the necessities of the house, you don’t have enough to actually survive off,” said Chy. “So now you have to decide, am I going to pay my rent or am I going to feed my kids?”

For Chy and her husband, Will, life has become a constant struggle to cover even their most basic needs.

“He was going to school at the time, and there was a point he was working five jobs,” Chy explained. “He was going on like 20 minutes of sleep here and there. We didn’t see him, like at all. It was… it was hard.”

With rising costs and emergencies piling up, their hard work still wasn’t enough. 

“We had nothing,” said Chy. “We just paid rent, it cost us everything we had. And during this time, we took the drive out to Joshua and if it wasn’t for that we wouldn’t have made it because without it, we wouldn’t have been able to survive.”

That’s when Chy and Will turned to OpenDoor Foodbank, a partner of Operation Blessing, hoping for just enough food to feed their family.

“They gave us the food, and it was a lot… so like I was not expecting it,” Chy recalled. “The food literally almost lasts about almost two weeks.”

Thanks to you, Chy and Will’s family finds stability in the middle of hardship. 

“As a parent, you know, you're able to know that even if you're struggling, you're still providing,” said Chy. “So, it's not just taking stress off of just us as the parents. It takes stress off of the entire family.”

And once their own needs were met, they began helping others — picking up food for neighbors, friends, and families who were also in need.

“I've watched people cry, you know, while I'm dropping this food off to them,” Chy shared. “And so, I see the amount that I'm getting from you, and I see the amount that I'm giving to others and it's a ripple effect. But it started with y'all ‘cause that's where it began, right? So yeah, truly, thank you is just not enough.”
