Before we knew the Father, He formed us and knew us, and He loves us deeply. We make mistakes, fail to use wisdom, and rely on our own understanding.
Proverbs 3:12
For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.*
OPEN VERSE IN BIBLE (nlt)
(NIV) tells us, “…the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”
As I listened to this gentleman speak about his foster son, I realized that this young boy brings him delight. How much more do we, as children of God, bring delight to our heavenly Father?
Being in the foster care system, the future of this young boy is uncertain. To his foster dad, it makes no difference. Our future appears to be uncertain to us, but to our Abba Father, it is clear. He gives us a glimpse in Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
OPEN VERSE IN BIBLE (nlt)
(NIV): “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Because of what Christ did for me on the cross, I am new, clean, and pure.
Isaiah 1:18
"Come now, let's settle this," says the LORD."Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow.Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.
OPEN VERSE IN BIBLE (nlt)
a (ESV) says, “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow.”
Because of Jesus’ blood shed for me, I am clothed in white. Though I see a white that is deeper or darker than I prefer, God sees me as white as snow.
Psalms 42:1-2
As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?
OPEN VERSE IN BIBLE (nlt)
states, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” The change in the soul of the believer is eternal, and that is the moment it can no longer be “reopened” to the way it was before.
The body is filled with mysteries only God fully understands, and it is always a treasure of knowledge to discover the details of things like growth plates, especially through the eyes of a growing boy. However, the most incredible gift we have is our soul, because it is the deep place God inhabits. He does not open it for a season, only to close it later to leave us stuck with some kind of stunted growth. Once He dwells in our soul, we are free to grow into the radiant person He destined us to become.
Just like my rings were symbols, so is my empty finger. In time, He will fill the creases. Verses 10 and 11 of 1 Peter 5 (NIV) make it clear: “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.” There is no emptiness that in His power He will not fill. In His perfect timing, my empty finger will cease to be a symbol of loss and uncertainty. Instead, He will turn it into my beacon of joy and hope through Him. What God can do for me, He can do for you.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (NIV)
Is it possible that the unexpected can be a gift from God? Certainly, snow is His doing, and it is a gift. Even though it causes potential hazards and inconveniences, its beauty is like nothing else on earth. So is true with calamity. Even though it causes pain, God uses it in our lives to draw us near to Him. That is when the unexpected becomes the perfect gift. God uses the unexpected for our good and for His glory.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him ...”Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together* for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

The gift may come when loss of fertility leads to the most beautiful adoption, or when the worst earthly sickness ends in eternal healing. Sometimes mourning turns to dancing. Often suffering precedes restoration.Jeremiah 31:13
The young women will dance for joy, and the men—old and young—will join in the celebration.I will turn their mourning into joy. I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing.
OPEN VERSE IN BIBLE (nlt)
b:
“I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.” (NIV)
If we know that the best gifts from the Father come in the unexpected, then as they come, we can trust that He is working on our behalf. Then we can begin to see beauty in ashes and roses among thorns. And when the deepest winter storms come, we can lay down with our faces to heaven and make snow angels.
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”Romans 8:18
Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.

What my dog Macie did not know is that I was subjecting her to the fasting and testing in order to diagnose something going wrong in her body. She had been showing signs and symptoms of a thyroid disease known as Cushings Disease for months. I was pursuing the testing so that, with the help of her veterinarian, I could help her heal. Ultimately, I want her to live a full, happy life for as long as possible.
God allows trials and valleys in our lives for many reasons. Just like the symptoms in Macie’s body, we have areas in our lives that can make us sick spiritually. We can have “symptoms” of pride, unfaithfulness, a poor attitude, or an unforgiving heart. God may allow a period of difficulty because He loves us enough to help us. His greatest desire is for us to live fully and completely in Him.
In John 10:10
The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
OPEN VERSE IN BIBLE (nlt)
(NIV), Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
In Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
OPEN VERSE IN BIBLE (nlt)
(NIV), God’s plans for us are clear: “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
At the end of a long day at the vet, I waited expectantly for the door to open as the technician brought Macie to me in the waiting room. Even though I was responsible for her exhausting day, she ran to me, her tail wagging, and she jumped into my arms. Her excitement with me that day pales in comparison to the joy we experience at the end of our tough trials. God’s glory is revealed, as we celebrate with Him our journey to the other side. And when He is standing to greet us with open arms, we realize that our Master knew what He was doing all along.
