Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Phones Recalled for Catching Fire
The United States government is recalling nearly 1 million Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Phones.
The recall comes after 100 reports of phones spontaneously overheating and exploding.
"Because this product presents such a serious fire hazard I am urging all consumers to take advantage of this recall right away," said U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Elliott Kaye.
The phones pose more than a fire hazard threat, but also a safety threat. So far, there have been 26 reports of burns and 55 reports of property damage from the phones.
The phones are so dangerous that airlines won't allow travelers to turn them on at all while flying.
Meanwhile, Tim Baxter, president of Samsung Electronics America, has issued an apology.
"We did not meet the standard of excellence that you expect and deserve. We apologize," he said in a video released by the company.
Owners of these phones should return them immediately and get a full refund. Before now, the company was only offering exchanges. Samsung says new phones will be available no later than next Wednesday.
