The U.S. Supreme Court has issued an injunction protecting the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged from having to provide contraceptive coverage until an appeals court rules on their case.

The order, issued by Justice Sonya Sotomayor, also covers 400 other Catholic organizations that receive health benefits from the same Catholic provider.

The high court said the groups only have to inform the Department of Health and Human Services of their religious identity and objections.

Friday's decision is being hailed as another victory for religious freedom in a string of court cases challenging the contraception mandate in Obamacare.

"It made no sense for the Little Sisters to be singled out for fines and punishment before they could even finish their suit," the nuns' lawyer, Mark Rienzi of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, said.
