The Magnetic Pull of God’s Word

I have always had a deep affection for books. There is something incredibly comforting about the weight of a well-bound volume and the promise of the stories waiting inside. Recently, while transferring my personal library to a new bookshelf, I found myself pausing when I reached the shelf dedicated to my Bibles.

Pulling the Bibles down one by one, I looked closely at their condition. Years of consistent use and study had beautifully worn many of them. The covers were frayed, the spines were creased, and the pages were heavily decorated with highlighted lines and handwritten margin notes. While holding the Bibles, I reflected on quiet days and long evenings spent reading specific passages for the very first time, recalling the exact moments those words brought profound peace and clarity to my soul.

Those frayed covers and inked notes were tangible reminders of my deep, enduring love for the truth on the pages. They bore witness to what I have held onto tightly in my heart through every twist and turn of life. Like a magnetic pull, the “draw” of God’s Word constantly brings me back, whether in times of joy or pain. 

When we love something, we naturally long for it. Love is a profound affection or desire for a person, place, or thing, and my deepest affection belongs to God’s truth. Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, beautifully expresses this exact sentiment of my heart. Virtually every single passage in this magnificent psalm references the unmatched beauty, authority, and vital importance of the Word of God.

The psalmist perfectly captures this intense spiritual hunger in Psalm 119:20 (NLT), writing:

I am always overwhelmed with a desire for your regulations.

When life gets complex, uncertain, or overwhelming, the Bible is my ultimate anchor. It has helped me learn how to navigate hard decisions, heal from disappointments, and walk through daily life with a steady confidence in The One who allowed the words of the Bible to be written. The more we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the more our affection for the Author grows, leading us to cry out like the psalmist in Psalm 119:97:

Oh, how I love your instructions! I think about them all day long.

God gives His instruction, His Word, to be deeply woven into the fabric of our everyday lives (see Deuteronomy 6:6-9; Proverbs 7:3). His Word is a living, breathing letter—an invitation to draw us into a closer, more intimate relationship with Him (see Hebrews 4:12; John 15:15).

Take a moment to look at your own Bible today. God is actively waiting to meet you within those sacred pages (see James 4:8). He is ready and willing to offer fresh comfort, steady guidance, and unshakeable hope for whatever trial or impossible situation you are facing right now (see Psalm 119:105; Romans 15:4).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of Your Word. Give me hunger and absolute love for Your truth. May Your instructions guide my steps, comfort and heal my heart, and draw me closer to You every single day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
