A Mother’s Nightmare
Five-month-old Juan José was born at home with a fluid filled sac on the back of his skull. It’s a congenital condition called an encephalocele that allows cerebral spinal fluid to leak from the brain into the lump. “When I saw him, I was scared because my other children were not born like this,” his mom Argelía told us. “I thought he was going to die.”
A doctor confirmed Argelia’s fears. He said the baby needed emergency surgery in Guatemala City, far from where they lived. The family could not even afford transportation, let alone pay for the operation. “I prayed and asked God to help me find a solution,” said Argelía.
As the months passed, the mass grew larger and caring for the baby became more difficult. “He could not be moved suddenly. There was a special way to change him. Only my daughter and I carried him because the lump would swell and turn purple.”
“I’m afraid that when he’s older, he will ask us ‘why am I like this?’ said Daniela, Juan José’s older sister. “And I wondered if he was going to die.”
“I don’t have the funds to treat him,” Argelía added. “It’s so hard to watch him suffer with this and not be able to help him.”
Then thanks to YOU, Operation Blessing paid for Juan Jose to receive surgery to repair the opening in his skull and to remove the lump . The surgery was a success and now Juan José is a healthy, happy baby boy.
"Now he can move freely and does not cry from the pain anymore. I am so happy!” said Argelía. “Thanks to God, and to all the people who support Operation Blessing for helping my son. Thank you!”
