“It Felt Like a Big Bear Grabbing My Heart”

Yuxuan wants to be a police officer when she grows up.

“I like to stand up for people when they need help,” she explains.

Yuxuan knows what it’s like to need help.  She was born with heart disease, and although she got surgery as a baby, for years she still lacked a ventricle and was always sick.

“Her heart wasn’t developed right, and her vascular system wasn’t normal.  Some parts weren’t connected,” her father expounds.  “So, as she grew up, she didn’t have enough oxygen in her blood.”  

Yuxuan’s mother adds, “She couldn’t exercise.  Sometimes, she saw children dancing and wanted to dance, too, but she couldn't catch her breath, and her lips turned purple.”  

She had lots of high fevers and ended up at the local clinic, where she regularly got IVs and injections.  

“The doctor said we were treating the symptoms rather than the root cause of the problem, which was damaging her immune system and making her susceptible to getting sick more often,” Mrs. Nan shares.

“I was scared,” confesses Yuxuan.  “It was like a big bear grabbing my heart, and I couldn’t move.  I wanted to be strong, but my heart hurt, and I just wanted to sleep.” 

Mr. Nan cries, “I was afraid of losing my daughter, but I needed to be resilient and get the best treatment we could for Yuxuan.”

Mr. Nan worked day and night, and the family saved as much as they could.  Yet when a doctor said Yuxuan needed emergency surgery or she could die, the Nans didn’t have the money.

“I hoped someone would help us,” Mr. Nan remembers.
