Baby Rachana was born with a cleft lip. Her young parents told us they were heartbroken and confused.  “I couldn’t accept it when I saw her,” VannDen, the baby’s father told us. “We did two ultrasounds but doctors never saw it. When she was born, I felt shocked and helpless.”

Before Rachana was born, they couple worked at a shoe factory in Cambodia where they live.  Together they earned a combined $8 a day. They knew they could never pay for an operation.

And because of the baby’s condition, Tola was forced to stop work to care for her full time.
But that didn’t stop Tola from thinking she may have caused the condition her baby was born with.

“My job was to glue shoes together.  I did it every day. I kept wondering if the fumes or chemicals harmed my baby,” said Tola, the heartbroken mother. "No one in our family has ever had a cleft lip,"

Meanwhile Rachana was struggling to drink enough formula; struggling to gain weight; struggling to survive. “Nights are the hardest,” recalled Tola. “Rachana cries in pain and sleeps only briefly.  I fear the worst, wondering if one night she will not wake up.”

Then the couple saw an ad that Operation Blessing posted on Facebook which encouraged families to apply for free surgery for their children. Thanks to YOU, Operation Blessing quickly arranged and paid for Rachana to receive the surgery needed to repair her cleft lip.

Now she smiles all the time.  Her whole face lights up with joy!” declared VannDen. “Everyone keeps saying look at that beautiful smile.”

“I can’t stop staring at her new smile,” added Tola.  It’s absolutely beautiful.  Now I want to take her everywhere with me.  None of this would be possible without your help.  From the bottom of my heart thank you to everyone who made her surgery happen!”
