A Little Girl’s Dream of Seeing Comes True

11-year-old Patricia was born with bilateral strabismus or crossed eyes.  She lives with her family in Chiapas Mexico. Her parents are so poor they couldn’t even take her to an eye doctor until she turned 3.  “We realized that her eyes were not normal,” said Manuela her mother. “We had never seen anyone with crossed eyes like that before.”

When they finally saw the doctor, they learned that the muscles Patricia’s eyes could only be repaired with an operation: A cost they would have to pay themselves.  “We work planting beans and coffee,” added Manuela. “To support the family, my husband and two sons work 3 days on our plot of land and 2 days for others.  All together we earn only forty-five dollars a week.”

As Patricia got older, doing everyday tasks and attending school became more difficult.  “My daughter has difficulty helping me at home,” said Manuela. “She tried to make tortillas or do embroidery, but she can't. Even though she holds things very close to her eyes, she still cannot see well.”

“My eyes hurt when I try to focus on something,” said Patricia. They also hurt when I walk under the sun I get bad headaches.”

Patricia has grown use to a life filled with limits and restrictions.  “I would love to learn to read. But when the teacher writes on the board, I can't see. I squint to focus on them but that makes my eyes hurt.”  “We are worried about her future,” added Manuela. “And she may never be able to work because of her condition.”

Then Operation Blessing met Patricia as we were setting up a safe water project in her community. Thanks to YOU we paid for her to receive surgery to repair the muscles in both eyes. “My daughter is much happier now! From the moment she wakes up she smiles a lot and is eager to go to school and help me with around the house,” said the thankful mom.

“I thank God that you came and paid for my operation,” concluded Patricia. “You gave me a new life!”
