The Simple Life

CBN.com Steve and Jane Sauter have always lived the simple life -- that is, if you call having eight kids, six goats, two horses and two dogs simple. But when their saw mill business slowed down, they really learned how to live within their means.

“There was one time we didn’t have gas in either of the cars,” said Jane.

With one business failing, Steve started another venture that was quite lucrative.

“We saw an opportunity for selling generators and so I began to purchase the individual components and basically build them up from scratch,” said Steve.

About that time Steve and Jane heard Pat Robertson give a teaching on The 700 Club that challenged their beliefs about giving.

“I had always grown up in the church believing that if you gave to the Lord you shouldn’t expect anything back and when Pat started teaching about the Law of Reciprocity, I remember thinking ‘wow that doesn’t make any sense’,” said Steve. “That was so foreign to what I had learned in the past.”

Steve and Jane decided to put this revolutionary idea to the test. The generators had stopped selling. Steve and Jane had to do something.

“We had several generators left over that we could not sell and finally I just said to Jane one day, ‘why don’t we just give the first one to the Lord and just see what God wants to do with these things',” said Steve.

So when one of the generators sold, Steve and Jane gave the profit to CBN. After that, the saw mill business took off.

“That fall was the busiest we had ever been and I realized it was because of the fact that we had given to CBN at that point, that we were seeing the blessing of it,” said Steve.

Steve eventually started an internet company selling printer inks and supplies. When it prospered, the Sauters gave even more to CBN.

“We saw our business just in months grow, oh, in phenomenal leaps and bounds and we’re just -- ‘it’s gotta be the Lord, there’s no other way that you can [explain] this', ” said Steve.

Though they’ve prospered, the Sauters still live a simple life. And when it comes to giving, they make it clear as to what’s really important.

“If we are faithful to the Lord and doing what He’s requiring us to do, then there’s no limit to what He can do through us if we’re faithful to obey Him,” said Jane.
