The Ultimate Test of Faith: Eight Miscarriages After The Call of Motherhood
Myshel Wilkins has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in Christian music, including Mandisa and TobyMac. But nothing compared to the joy she and her husband, Michael, felt when they found out they were expecting their first child.
“We were so excited,” Myshel remembers. “We had colors and names and parties — everything you could imagine.”
That excitement turned to heartbreak during what was supposed to be a routine appointment.
“We were all excited to hear the baby's heartbeat again,” Michael recalls. “But then the nurse said, ‘I’m so sorry. There’s no longer a heartbeat.’”
The loss was devastating.
“It hurt like a pain I had never felt before,” Michael says. “No parent should have to go through that.”
Myshel remembers feeling numb as her husband wept on her chest. Later, sitting in the car, she noticed the title of a song she’d been working on: Count It All Joy.
“I remember staring at those words, angry and frustrated,” she says. “How could anyone count it all joy when going through something like this? But I felt like God was asking me, ‘Do you want to find out how that’s possible?’”
That question marked a turning point.
“My wife was humming in the car when we left,” Michael recalls. “That humming turned into singing when we got home — and that singing turned into hours of praise. The atmosphere changed. We felt His presence lift us up and remind us we could try again.”
Holding on to a Promise
Despite the loss, Myshel felt God’s assurance that they would have two children.
“I had bought two onesies,” she says. “Every day I’d say, ‘I can’t wait to hold you.’ I just knew I was going to have two children. I felt like the Lord gave me permission to contend for that promise.”
But the journey was far from over. The couple endured two more miscarriages.
“It wasn’t easy,” Michael says. “Hearing, ‘I’m sorry, you’ve lost another one,’ felt like punches.”
Through every heartbreak, Myshel held on to hope.
“Every time the doctor would say there’s no longer a heartbeat, I’d say, ‘Let’s try again.’”
Their perseverance was rewarded when they finally welcomed a healthy baby boy.
“It was surreal,” Michael recalls. “Seeing my wife hold our son — my namesake — flooded my heart with joy.”
“He was so strong,” adds Myshel. “It was a beautiful time of celebrating what God had done.”
More Loss, More Faith
Just when they thought the worst was behind them, the couple experienced more miscarriages — five in total, bringing the number to eight.
“After the fifth one, I told my wife I was done,” Michael admits. “I didn’t want to ride that emotional roller coaster anymore.”
But Myshel refused to let go of the promise.
“I went to my closet and had a very intense conversation with the Lord,” she says. “I told Him, ‘You touch my husband’s heart.’”
A few weeks later, her prayer was answered.
“I spent some time with the Lord,” Michael says. “And I felt peace about trying again.”
That decision led to the birth of their second child.
“When number two was born, a wave of relief and gratitude washed over me,” Myshel says. “God, You did it. You said two — and here they are.”
Faithfulness Fulfilled
Today, the Wilkins family stands as a testament to faith through suffering.
“The first thing that floods my heart is gratefulness,” Michael says. “To see our promises right in front of us — the Lord is faithful. I love being a dad. It’s the greatest feeling I’ve ever had.”
“I learned about a God who is a treasure in dark places,” adds Myshel. “I saw Him come to my rescue, and it built our faith in ways I’m so grateful for. The Lord knows — and I wouldn’t change a thing.”
